10 Second Trick

As #smallbusinessowners and #entrepreneurs we often have several things going all at once. The pressures of life can be overwhelming and lead to stress, anxiety, burnout, inability to focus, and general feelings of being unwell and tired.
We often blame tiredness or aging when we can’t focus, but there’s usually something sneakier at play: mental overstimulation. Our brains weren’t built to handle 300 tabs open (literal or mental). Every ping, scroll, or multitask moment chips away at our attention span.
Research from the University of California, Irvine found that it takes the average person over 23 minutes to refocus after a distraction.
Try this 10-second trick to hit reset.
Close your eyes, take a slow breath in for 4 seconds, hold for 2, and breathe out for 4. Repeat twice. That’s it. Ten seconds of intentional breathing, with your eyes closed, no phone, no noise.
It seems too simple to work, but studies show slow, focused breathing triggers your parasympathetic nervous system—the one responsible for rest and calm. You quiet the fight-or-flight response, slow your heart rate, and increase blood flow to the brain.
Be well, Gems! You got this. 💪
